Mount Brandon Pottery School is located on the stunning grounds of Mount Brandon self-catering Holiday Cottages, a mere 5 minutes’ walk from the medieval town of Graiguenamanagh. The village of the monks is only an hour and a half drive from Dublin and is nestled between the scenic Brandon Hill and the beautiful Barrow River Valley. The pottery school is run by Carmen Wenner, a qualified potter with a BA in ceramics, who is registered with the Crafts Council of Ireland.
Carmen has many years’ experience in teaching evening pottery classes with Kilkenny VEC. She specializes in hand-built and wheel-thrown ceramics. In July 2013 Carmen completed her purpose-built pottery studio where she teaches children and adults the craft of pottery. Students learn how to make pinch pots, coil pots and slab building as well as how to throw at the wheel. After the first firing the pieces are decorated and glazed. The pottery classes are small in order to give each student maximum attention. Courses vary in length to suit the various requirements. Choose from a 2-hour taster class (if you’ve never done pottery before) or a four-week class to gain more insight into the art of pottery (when you’ve been bitten by the clay bug). It can become an addictive hobby. The classes are available to locals and cottage guests alike. If you need a break from being a tourist, learning a new craft could be just the ticket…
If you love ceramics but don’t have the time to do a class yourself, visit the studio to browse – you might just fall in love with a unique gift or souvenir. Or why not take a virtual tour of Mount Brandon Pottery School.
Carmen works from her studio in Graiguenamanagh, Kilkenny. The pieces are made using hard-wearing stoneware clay which makes them dishwasher and microwave safe.
